That's me in my kitchen with homemade bone broth--more on that below but first: We’ve all heard of “broth”. Broth is made from meat with water and added spices. But there’s a big difference between broth and “bone” broth. Just like it sounds, bone broth is made from the bones of the animal--chicken, turkey, cows and even fish. Bone broth contains a lot more health benefits than plain broth or stock. Bone Broth Benefits *Packed with nutrition *Great source of proteins & other key nutrients like Iron and Vitamin A & Vitamin K *Good for hair, skin & nails *Good for gut health-amino acids contained in bone broth help heal the gut & aids in digestion *Sleep aid-glycine found in bone broth can help us get a good night’s sleep Hair Loss When I first started losing my hair back in October of 2016 due to a medication I’d been on, I was obsessed with finding ways to get it back. One way to grow hair—consume as much protein as possible. So, since then I’ve been drinking it non-stop, nearly every day. Confession I don’t like drinking bone broth. The taste is about what you might imagine—warm, salty water with a hint meat flavors. Since I really don’t like meat anyway, it’s clearly not one of my favorite beverages. But something I’ve reminded myself about along the way has helped motivate me to get on sipping it. I’m not drinking it for the taste but for the benefits. So, I suck it up and sip it. I’ve made it a part of my breakfast for more than four years. Picture Perfect? These pictures show me with—not store-bought bone broth-- but homemade. My husband, bless his heart, actually made it for me every week for more than two years. In my next blog, I’ll explain what’s involved in creating the concoction. But eventually, I discovered why homemade may not have be as beneficial as the store bought. I’ll also share the exact brand I’ve opted to stick with after trying dozens! Grateful for you! I hope you enjoy reading my blog and the information resonates with you. And I especially hope and pray you’ll share it with your friends, family and loved ones. I’m 58 years old and my goal is to stay healthy—naturally-- as I get older. I want to learn as much as I can about staying healthy with whole foods and natural remedies. College Days, Beer Days It’s mostly coffee for drinks, for me, these days. But a long time ago, beer caused me a lot of of distress. When I was going to THE Ohio State University, I loved my share of suds. I admit, I drank too much, too often. In my late 20s, I would develop an allergy to it. This was so weird. It was the first “food” with which I’d ever had an intolerance. The physical symptoms would unfold exactly the same & right on schedule, every single time. In fact, I could set my watch to it: 1st beer=My ears would get hot—hot to the touch even & turn visibly, bright red 2nd beer=Loud, stomach gurgling & churning 3rd beer=Well, I’ll spare you the details but let’s just say I’d need a bathroom ‘toot’ sweet & the night would be over—for me, anyway! God said “No more” I never found exactly what ingredient in beer caused my issues. But eventually, I gave up trying to drink something that made me sick. Duh!! My body was saying “no more!” I’m a believer and know that God was also guiding my steps. I would switch to wine---drinking it only once or twice a week. Today, I might have a glass of wine or a margarita once in a while. I remember, I had a doctor who once told me something that made so much sense, it’s the reason I drink less today: “Alcohol is poison”, he said. “Why do you think they set it on fire in restaurants in fancy drinks and desserts?” That has stuck with me all these years later. So, I know I’m better off “eating” my calories rather than “drinking” them. Good Foods, Bad Reactions These days, it’s food that has me checking my body and waiting for stomach discombobulation. Typically, my ears aren’t affected but I do get the old familiar stomach issues and occasionally get hives on my neck, stomach, back and my arms and hands. Through the process of elimination, I’m working to find the exact culprit. But here’s something annoying: I eat clean—really, I do! Most of my diet consists of whole foods—honest-to-goodness, God-given & grown veggies & fruits from the earth. See!? Frustrating! Seeking Solutions I’ve got a few ideas of what might be causing this round of allergic reactions, dairy, protein powders, chia seeds, bananas and/or something else. I’m working now to find the exact cause or causes. In the meantime, I’m seeking the help of a doctor. I’m heading to a gastroenterologist this week to make sure nothing more serious is going on. I will keep you posted. Do you have food intolerances? What are your tell-tale signs & symptoms? I’ve never heard of anyone else’s ears turning red. Has that happened to you, too? It means the world to me. I like social media—mainly for the positive, uplifting people I’m grateful enough to come across. But occasional the bullies get to me. It seems there’s no discrimination when it comes to bullying. No matter how successful you are, how much—or little-- you weigh, how tall you are, hold young or how old you are—people can find fault with you. The other day on Instagram, a woman compared me to a “living cadaver”. She added “You’re so skinny, students should study you to learn about—ligaments, muscles”. Ouch! Guess what I said? “Thank you!” Yeah, it takes me awhile. Venom-spewed hate isn’t part of my vernacular so it takes me a hot minute to realize I’ve been slammed. I realize this says mor about her than it does me. But I also admit: it gets to me. I may be 58 years old but—yep-- it still hurts. I get angry & frustrated, begin to doubt myself, even stop posting for a few days. I know, I know—just ignore them. But you see, I was relentlessly, verbally abused as a kid—“You’re ugly”, “You’re stupid”—words do hurt. It’s mind blowing—and oh so hard for me to understand why anyone lobs hatred at others. I don’t get it. I’m busy enough as it is trying to work on myself, trying to be a better person than I was yesterday. I know I don’t have time to write a critic of someone else’s life or appearance. Remember, the opposite is true too—a positive word can change someone’s entire day, month or even life. So, be generous with kindness. Here on my blog and on social media, I love talking: diet; workouts; positivity; growth & achievement. And while it may slow me down a day or two, no amount of hatred will keep me from my passions. “If they don’t like you for being yourself, be yourself even more.”~Taylor Swift . It seems that way anyway. But there could be more to it. Talking up my right leg (back one in this picture). Normally, it’s tucked behind my left. But finally—just in the past two weeks—I’m noticing improvement---albeit a small one! It’s been a real problem for me. The right leg is much weaker, with more loose skin & cellulite. I even have prominent varicose veins. . Background I hurt my back badly 26 years ago. For three years, the only thing I could do for exercise-- swim or walk in a pool. This was a brutal, depressing time for me. Doctors told me I’d never be able to much more than that. However, frustration and anger fueled me. Eventually, I was able to start walking on a treadmill, then jogging & running. I would continue to progress while tuning out the naysayers---and there are a lot of those in the medical industry! The Injury My injury was a compressed spine but the pain is only on the entire right side of my body. Consequently, my right side is less developed, weaker & contains more fat & loose skin. I’ve worked on the discrepancy for years. So, I’ve been working my right leg harder in the last five years—using slightly more weight or doing more reps than on my left. I tried to think why suddenly I’m seeing a smoother surface, fewer fat pockets, more muscle and even smaller veins. There could be two reasons for the improvement: 1/Consistency- Could it be that my clean food diet and work outs are finally paying off? Possibly. 2/Lowering my refined sugar-I’ve really cut back on refined sugar. I never really ate that much to begin with but I’ve tried to cut it out completely and I’m doing better than I thought I would. I’ve been off the white stuff for more than 10 weeks and I’ve only had a couple weak moments—apple pie and ice cream did it for me! . Have you noticed any changes in your physique lately that you’re grateful for? Tell me about it in the comments section below. BTW: The main reason my left leg is always in front in pics--I get asked about this all the time! You see, because of my injury & partial disability, I cannot pose with my right hip forward. It just doesn’t work---and it’s not pretty anyway! Sudden Impact! Overnight transformation—seemingly, anyway. . Do you have a question about today’s post? Or is there a topic you’d like to see me address here? Let me know. Send me a message below. Stay happy at FitOver50Plus. . Planks are incrediblye good for us. And we don’t need any equipment---just a solid surface and our body. I now have a passion for planks! I was scrolling my Instagram feed recently when I saw info about just how good they are for us. It also included this: “Try holding a plank five minutes every day!” Challenge accepted. That sounded like a long time but I thought I could get there eventually. I’ve always known planks are challenging & good for the abs. But I had no clue how beneficial they are for our overall health & muscle development. Planks are Pertinent 1/Plank Holds-Strengthen our *entire* body 2/Stance-Balancing in plank helps our posture. 3/Better Back-Planks strengthen the back which helps to prevent back injuries. 4/Equilibrium-Planks give us better balance, improved flexibility. 5/Disposition-Planks boost our mood & relieve stress. 6/Metabolic Rate-Planks speed up our metabolism. This means we’ll burn more calories at rest. The first time I tried a few weeks ago—I struggled to 4:10. Now-get this—I can hold my planks for 7:00! The feeling of accomplishment that comes with that? Phenomenal—see, it is a mood booster! So, suddenly I’m pumped & primed for planks. I now do them at the *end* of almost every work out. Yep, planks are the cherry on top of my running, weights & yoga--sweet, yet a challenging & perfect way to wrap up a work out. BTW: The World record for plank was set in 2016. A guy held it for 8 hrs. & one min! . To learn the best form for planks, go to Lynda’s Day--at the top of the page and click on tab. And hey, if you have a topic you’d like me to address here---send me the idea below in the comments section. Lynda’s Day is just $9.97 per YEAR!! Now that is a deal! I’m embarrassed, humiliated, ashamed and fatter. My jeans are tighter. Okay, okay—a bit of a drama queen--but still..sigh! I had a great plan--sugar free for 30 days. I was so close. But then “it” happened: A trip to Costco would derail me. I was having some peeps over on July 4th and couldn’t pass up an apple pie. No temptation for me---easy as “pie”. Here’s how the “crime” went down: That humungous thing won’t fit in my ‘fridge & I’m forced to cut it up. Oops, I get some on my fingers--darn! I lick it off. Then plop--some on the counter. Five hundred calories of Dutch Apple Pie licks, plops & splatters later— I get the rest stuffed in the ‘fridge. That sugar, butter & flour concoction taunted me!! Blimy. But wait—I do have some good news out of all of this and I’m surprised. You see, I might not have used restraint at first but I did… eventually. Here’s what I mean: Typically, I wouldn’t have stopped with the pie mess. I might have gone on to M&Ms & more. But I stopped. Yep, stopped right after the pie calamity. Today would’ve marked 30 days off sugar: (I’ll add an asterisk by my name!). So, I’m continuing on-- 60, maybe 90 days! Join me for Lynda’s Sugar Shake-off Challenge! One bit of advice—don’t go to Costco! . Honesty is the fastest way to prevent a mistake from turning into a failure.~James Altucher, Hedge fund Manager .
